Welcome to RecipeLark!

Hi there! I’m Jennifer Hayes, and I’m so glad you’ve found your way to RecipeLark. This is more than just a recipe website it’s a place where cooking becomes joyful, approachable, and deeply satisfying. Whether you’re a seasoned home cook or just starting to find your rhythm in the kitchen, you’ll find recipes here that speak to real life, real ingredients, and real flavor.

Our Story

My love for cooking didn’t start in a cozy farmhouse kitchen or with a family of expert chefs. It actually began out of necessity during my college years in Seattle. As a broke student living off-campus, I quickly realized that surviving on instant ramen wasn’t going to cut it. I called my mom one evening, desperate for help, and she walked me through making a simple tomato pasta over the phone. That moment standing in my tiny apartment kitchen, tasting something I’d actually made changed everything.

From that first wobbly attempt, I became obsessed. I started experimenting with budget-friendly ingredients, learning to turn humble pantry staples into meals that felt like celebrations. Friends would gather in my cramped kitchen, and suddenly, cooking wasn’t just about feeding myself it was about connection, creativity, and the magic of transforming simple ingredients into something memorable.

After college, I moved to Melbourne for work, and my culinary education truly took flight. I explored farmers’ markets, learned about seasonal cooking, and discovered how food could tell stories of culture and place. When I eventually returned to the States and settled in Portland, I knew I wanted to share this journey. RecipeLark was born from those years of experimenting, failing, succeeding, and always, always cooking with heart.

Our Philosophy

At RecipeLark, I believe that great food doesn’t require fancy techniques or hard-to-find ingredients. It requires curiosity, a willingness to try, and the understanding that cooking is as much about the process as the final dish.

I’m passionate about recipes that:

  • Respect your time without sacrificing flavor
  • Use accessible ingredients you can find at your local grocery store
  • Encourage creativity and personal touches
  • Bring people together around the table

Cooking should feel like a gift you give yourself, not another chore on an endless to-do list. That’s the RecipeLark promise.

Meet Jennifer

When I’m not testing recipes in my kitchen (which, let’s be honest, is most of the time), you can find me exploring Portland’s incredible food scene, tending to my somewhat overgrown herb garden, or curled up with a cookbook and a cup of tea. I share my home with my partner Alex and our food-obsessed rescue dog, Basil, who has perfected the art of the guilt-inducing stare during dinner prep.

I’m self-taught, endlessly curious, and still learning something new every time I cook. I believe the best meals are the ones shared with people you love, and that there’s no such thing as a perfect recipe only one that’s perfect for you.
